Pointing your domain at your Web Hosting People hosting

Viewed 19 times

For your website to load, your domain needs to send visitors to our servers. There are two ways to do that.

Option 1: change the nameservers

This is the simplest method and the one we recommend. When you change nameservers, your domain uses our DNS entirely, which means records for your website, email and anything else we set up for you stay in one place.

  1. Log in to the company you registered the domain with.
  2. Find the DNS or nameserver settings for the domain.
  3. Replace the existing nameservers with the two shown in your welcome email.
  4. Save the change.

Option 2: keep your DNS elsewhere and point records at us

Use this if your domain has email or other services managed by another provider and you do not want to move them.

  • Create an A record for the root domain pointing to the IP address of your hosting account. You will find this in the client area or in cPanel.
  • Create a CNAME record for www pointing to your root domain.

Do not change your MX records if your email is staying with your current provider, as that would break it.

How long does it take?

Nameserver and DNS changes are not instant. Most take effect within a few hours, and almost all are complete within 48 hours. During this window some visitors may see the old site and others the new one. This is normal and resolves on its own.

If your domain is registered with us

There is nothing to change. New domains registered alongside hosting are pointed at your hosting automatically.
